Vitamins are essential for good health, as almost everyone knows. While vitamins by themselves do not provide nourishment to the body, they are essential for proper synthesis of nutrients and for carrying on essential body functions. Most vitamin requirements of the body can be met through natural foods and some dietary planning is enough to ensure you get the recommended amounts.
Generic natural foods will contain sufficient quantities of most vitamins. Most green leafy vegetables contain ample vitamins in the form of Vitamin B, Vitamin D and Vitamin K. Vitamin E can be obtained through cereals, milk, eggs and fish. Some vitamins require specific foods that are known to be rich in these vitamins. For example, carrots are rich in Vitamin A and citrus fruits are especially rich in Vitamin C. Care must also be taken to ensure that all variants of Vitamin B such as B2, B6, B7, B9 and B12 are not missing from your diet.
While natural foods are the best source of vitamins, lifestyle choices and even climate may still result in deficiencies. For example, synthesis of Vitamin D requires sunlight, which may not be available in winter months. For this and other deficiencies, it is recommended to take vitamin supplements. These supplements are available in the form of capsules and should be consumed daily. At the same time, it is pertinent to mention that vitamins are not easily extracted by the body from capsules, hence your diet should not be completely deficient in vitamins.
